AEO / GEO

When AI answers,
does it mention you?

More and more people in Hong Kong skip Google and ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude directly. They do not hand you ten results to pick from — they give one answer. Whether you are in that answer is what AEO is about.

The difference in one line

SEO is competing for a high spot among Google's ten links, which the user then clicks. AEO (answer engine optimisation) is competing to be named when the AI speaks — the user may never click a link at all. GEO is another name for the same thing, usually said of generative AI.

Where is the difference? A results page has ten slots; an AI answer usually names two or three. Fewer places to win, but each one is worth far more.

Preconditions

Three gates to pass before AI can mention you.

1 · It can be readYou need a public web page that does not block AI crawlers. Having only an Instagram account puts you at a real disadvantage — it is mostly images and it asks for a login, so AI can barely read it.
2 · It can be understoodThere has to be text, not just nice photos. Your name, what you do, which district, common questions — written clearly beats written beautifully.
3 · It joins upYour website, Instagram and Facebook should point at each other, so AI is confident they are one company rather than three unrelated things.

What Hong Kong shops actually look like

The three we see most: no website at all (just Instagram or WhatsApp); a website that is all images (looks good, but AI reads it and finds nothing); a website with text, but scattered across platforms and never joined up. All three have the same thing in common — AI is not unwilling to mention you, it simply does not know you exist.

None of this needs a whole new website to fix. The first step is only this: put one page of your official details somewhere AI can read, and point it back at your other platforms.

What every merchant on RankEasy gets automatically

None of this costs extra and none of it asks you to be technical. The technical layer is not what we sell — free tools already do it, so there is no reason to charge you for it.

  1. One merchant page AI can readName, one-line summary, full description, industry, links — all as text, with no crawler blocked.
  2. Structured data (JSON-LD)States in machine-readable form that “this page is a company”. We do not emit rating-type schema, because this board ranks by AI-readability and how complete the details are — it is not a rating of merchant quality.
  3. Cross-platform links (sameAs)Fill in your website, Instagram and Facebook and it is written out for AI as “these all belong to one company”.
  4. An llms.txt site guideA public table of contents written for AI — you can read ours here — so crawlers understand the site structure and the ranking rules faster.
  5. A crawl log you can checkWhich AI read your page and when, visible on your own merchant page.

We will not lie to you: a crawler reading you is not AI recommending you. Nobody controls who AI names, and any service promising “guaranteed AI recommendation” is lying to you. What can be done is to move you from “AI has never heard of you” to “AI knows who you are”. Whether it then mentions you is up to the AI.

Common questions

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO is about ranking high in Google's search results, where the user clicks through themselves. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is about being named when AI answers the user directly — the user may never click a link. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is another name for the same thing, said of generative AI like ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude.

What has to be true before AI can mention me?

Three things, all of them required. One, it can be read: your details need a public web page that does not block AI crawlers. Two, it can be understood: there has to be text, not just images — ideally a clear name, description, district, industry and common questions. Three, it joins up: your website, Instagram and Facebook should point at each other, so AI is confident they are one company.

My shop has no website, only Instagram. Can I still do anything?

Yes. Instagram is hard for AI to read — it is mostly images and video, and it asks for a login. The practical move is to put one page of your official merchant details on a public site AI can read, and point from there to your Instagram. AI then reads your company's details as text and also knows that Instagram account is yours.

Can I pay to make AI recommend me?

No. No person and no company controls who AI names. Any service promising “guaranteed AI recommendation” is lying to you. What can be done is to make your details exist, be clear and be readable — moving you from “AI has never heard of you” to “AI knows who you are”. Whether it then mentions you is up to the AI.

How do I know AI really read me?

Some AI identifies itself when it comes to read (the User-Agent), the server writes it down, and so the server log says who, when and which page. But that kind of number has three limits worth stating plainly. One: a User-Agent can be forged, so strictly speaking it only tells you how many reads claimed to be that. Two: having read a page only means a program fetched it — not that you are indexed, will be quoted, or will be recommended. Three: not every AI identifies itself — on 5 September 2026 we measured Grok reading this site without ever announcing itself, from scattered residential broadband IPs, dressed as an ordinary Windows Chrome; in a server log that is indistinguishable from a person. So any “AI read count” is incomplete by construction. Treat it as a reference, not a full list.

What is structured data (JSON-LD)? Do I need to understand it?

It is a block hidden inside the page, written for machines, saying “this page is about a company; here is its name, its industry, its official website”. People never see it; machines read it very accurately. You do not need to understand it — whoever builds your website should do this for you.

And what is llms.txt?

It is a plain-text file at the root of a website that explains, in simple language, what the whole site is, what matters on it and what to watch out for. Think of it as a table of contents written for AI. This site's copy is at https://www.rankeasy.hk/llms.txt, open to anyone.

How long does AEO take to show results?

AI crawlers re-read a site on a scale of weeks, not the same day. And even once it has been read, nobody can say when or under which question an AI will mention you. So the reasonable expectation is this: get “can be read” and “can be understood” right today; results come later. Any promise with a definite timetable deserves suspicion.
